A running back like Reggie Bush doesn’t come around that often, Houston

September 17, 2006

Imagine this for a minute, readers.

You’re the general manager of a NFL franchise that is pretty much the perennial doormat of the AFC South.

And when you have a shot at getting probably one of the greatest college football players of the 15 or so years, you balk and get some help for your defense by drafting a defensive end and bypassing the star running back.

You’re concerned about the future of the team, which had never produced a winning season in their history, but you wasted a good opportunity and let that opportunity slip away from you while your team waddles in the nether regions of the AFC.

That was the thinking that I had while I watched my Indianapolis Colts run roughshod on the Texans, which is about as routine as death and taxes.

Of course, Peyton Manning set another record by passing Johnny Unitas for most completions by a Colts quarterback, going 26 for 38 and 400 yards of passing, and throwing for three touchdowns.

Another day at the office for Peyton.

For Houston, it’s just another example of what could have been if they picked Reggie  Bush instead of Mario Williams.

Going into today’s action, the Saints have rushed for 156 yards on 41 carries through two games.

And the Texans?

Near the bottom with 70 yards of rushing.

The good news is that at least the Astros are trying to stay in the race for the NL Wild Card and create a diversion of sorts for the sports fans in Houston.

And then again, the Phillies just killed the Astros’ chances by sweeping them this weekend at Minute Maid Park.

So that would leave you with Houston Cougar football, Rice Owls football, and the start of Houston Rockets training camp to look forward to.

And then you have Big 12 football, which seems to be the only type of real football that the people in Houston can enjoy without putting a bag over their head for fear of roaring laughter.

At least you’ll see some winning football.

Except with the possibilty of Baylor, who hasn’t had a winning season since 1995 as members of the Southwest Conference.

But check this out Texan fans, can you imagine how your team would have been if you picked Reggie Bush like you were supposed to instead of that defensive end guy?

Think about it every time Bush scores a touchdown in black and gold down in Nawlins.

Really think about it.
